Bhuiyan Joins Savannah State University as Chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications

Savannah State University has appointed Serajul I. Bhuiyan, Ph.D. as Chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education to this leadership role.

Dr. Bhuiyan has served as Professor and Graduate Program Developer in the Department of Communication at Kuwait University since 2013. He has had a role in designing a new curriculum for a master’s program in Mass Communication focusing on Strategic PR and Advertising and Entrepreneurial Journalism. Previously, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Communication and Dramatic Arts at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama for four years.

Over his career, Dr. Bhuiyan also served as Professor and Founding Director of Mass Communication and Journalism at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Associate Professor and Founding Director of Mass Communication Department at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, and Associate Professor of Communication at Alcorn State University in Mississippi. He has been a Visiting Professor at institutions in Australia, Ireland, Bangladesh, and United Arab Emirates.

Dr. Bhuiyan earned a Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a M.B.A. with distinction from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. He also holds an M.Sc. degree in Extension and Communication and B.Sc. degree with honors in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology from Bangladesh Agricultural University. He also studied Mass Communications at Cornell University and Technical Communications at Iowa State University. He has completed professional development training at Harvard University, Cornell University, New York University, and at different professional institutes like Poynter Institute, American Press Institute, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and the Pew Center for Civic Journalism.
