Stephen E. Markwood

Stephen E. Markwood, Ed.D., is President Emeritus of Alderson-Broaddus College, where he served for 13 years.  During Dr. Markwood’s tenure, the College’s capital campaign raised $25 million against a goal of $10 million, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools awarded the institution a full 10-year accreditation, and the College launched several new academic programs. Active in many aspects of higher education, he has served as Vice Chair of the West Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges and Chair of the Appalachian College Association, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the American Baptist Colleges. 

Prior to his appointment at Alderson-Broaddus College, Dr. Markwood served as Provost at the Ottawa campus of Ottawa University, Kansas. Other posts he held during his career include Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs and Professor of Leadership at Marietta College, Director of Student Development and Vice President at the University of Rio Grande, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life at Dickinson College, and Assistant Dean for Student Life at Waynesburg College.

A native of Kentucky, Dr. Markwood earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and a doctorate in higher education from Pennsylvania State University.  He received the 2005 Leadership and Service Award from the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University.
